Our 2014 Rogue River fall fishing season started out with a bang! Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife Seign Counts at the Gold Beach was near record for Adult steelhead and half pounders. We were faced with low clear water due to a very dry winter. Our first September trip was off the charts, half pounders and Adult steelhead where everywhere but by late September fishing was tough, we were all questioning the fish counts, thankfully the Rogue River was still working it’s magic. It was a spectacular fall.
Mid October we started receiving heavy rains, these rains were early and heavy, the river came up and river was off color, I was worried about our fishing chances, WOW the fish were there! The last four trips were very good; we caught more Adult steelhead than we have seen in years. Our last trip was this past November 1-3, we spent our nights at Marial Lodge and Illahe Lodge both lodges were very accommodating and great! The river was high when we launched but the steelhead must not have noticed it, fishing was great! Especially on day two between Marial and Illahe lodges. The crew landed over 25 Adult steelhead and we all lost count on half pounders. With 68 degrees and sunshine and all the fish you could catch, it was a special Rogue River Trip. Tina and I are anxious about the possibility of running more November trips next season.
Historically we would always see strong returns of Adult steelhead following a big half pounder year, history did not fail us this season. With that said; next year should also be a great Adult steelhead year. This year’s half pounder counts exceeded last years and are three times the ten year average. The crew and I have only been off the river a few days and I am already excited for next season.
Tina and I want to say THANK YOU again to all the groups that came down the river this season and we look forward to seeing you again. We have great Rogue Rafting and Rogue Fall fishing dates available for next year, give us a call and let’s get out on the river!
