This year has taken a toll on Tina and myself, we have had 6 good friends and clients pass away. March 27, 2011 our dear friend and family friend Jeff Amsberry passed away.Jeff went to school with my parents, he guided with my dad and they lived 1/4 mile from us in Albany.
Growing up Jeff was always a person in my life, his son Brad became my best friend in second grade and we continued that friendship until we lost Brad at age 23.Jeff would take us fishing, as we grew older he would take us and our boat and we would meet him at a given time to go home. We dare not be late.
A few years after Brad passed Jeff and I had became closer. Jeff was a person whom you could ask advice, he would quote facts and give his heart-felt opinion. He helped Tina and I with our home in Merlin as well as many other things.
Jeff introduced me to upland bird hunting something I had not done what a HOOT! He taught me how to read a bird dog and how to read a piece of ground, we spent some great quality time chasing pheasants in the field. The past three years Jeff has booked all of my Wednesday’s for Steelhead and Spring Salmon fishing. We had a lot of great fishing days and a few, welllllllllllll…………….. I am sure you understand it’s called fishing.
No matter what our end result every trip our friendship grew stronger and more memories were made. This year we were only able to fish together twice, both on the Siletz for Winter Steelhead. Jeff was no nonsense, get your limit if you could and go home.
Our first trip was with good friend Jim Smith, we fished five holes and caught our limit of 4 hatchery steelies and on our way home by 10am. The second trip was with Rick Campbell it rained, it snowed, then it rained and snowed. We hooked 15 steelhead landed 8 and kept 4 hatchery steelhead with the boat on the tailor by 11am. These two trips were perfect in Jeff’s eyes.
These were Jeff’s only two trips but they were great and they created great memories for myself, Jim and Rick. Jim, Rick, Amy, Sharon, Dave, and I, we will all fish and hunt together again. I know we will sit around tell lot’s of stories, make a few jokes and re-live alot of great memories we had with our dear friend.
Jeff will not soon be forgotten… Thank you for all the wonderful memories!
