April 1st. will never be the same again, for the past 27 years I have fished with my dear friend and guest John Weisz JR. In fact John booked every Thursday from January through April, this would have been our 27th season fishing together.
Many of you know John and do not realize it. John was not only a great friend and fisherman but also was the man who was responsible for preparing our world-famous “Johnny Steak”. We have been serving his steak on the Deschutes and the Rogue River for the past 10 years!
John was one of those people who always caught fish. John simply believed! He did not care when I would call and say “John fishing slow not sure about tomorrow”. In his gruff voice he would say “Ah, I always catch fish Craig, what time are we going?”
John also was the one who started cooking breakfast on the boat. Egg’s, sausage and at my request Sour Dough hot cakes, WOW. I hope he left the recipe for me. If you want to draw attention to yourself just cook up a full breakfast on a still morning, with the great smell of sausage lofting across the water, many boats would come over and ask “How do we get some of that”? again in that unforgettable voice ” Ah book a trip”
The past few years John was taking his grandson’s, all he wanted was to see one of them catch a steelhead or salmon, not a surprise they are all pretty good fishermen.
We will keep cooking breakfast and I know John will keep sending us fish. ” Ah, I always catch fish”
John you were a great man. Thank you John.
