Rogue River Outfitters fishing report for 2010 and the quick forecast for 2011.
We started our Rogue Fall fishing season September 2nd, with a one boat trip. Bookings were light this year, we ran a couple of smaller trips and thanks to some wonderful guest and friends we has a couple of full trips. One thing I have to say is that it was a very good year to fish the Rogue canyon, with the removal of Gold Ray dam the fish, (mainly steelhead) left the lower river early and filled the canyon. Even though the water was a bit high and quite off color the steelhead bit well.
Mother nature was also on our side. We experienced unusual September rains which made fly fishing good and the rains kept the fish coming, then we experienced a normal but great October, sunny 75-80 degree days some call it an Indian Summer but on the Rogue we except this weather and we seem to get 3 plus weeks a year in October. On October 24th we received another good shot of rain followed by a new shot of fish and 2 more weeks of sunshine.
The Rogue River had 3 dams; Savage Rapids at Grants Pass was removed in fall 2009. Gold Ray dam was removed this fall and Lost creek which is a large flood control dam built after the 1964 flood and will probably never be removed.
It was a great disappointment to all anglers this year to have dirty water but the fish didn’t mind it at all, surprisingly to me the steelhead bit very well. There should be no more man caused surprises for the Rogue River. With the dams gone we should see improved fish runs and better water quality.
The predicted fish runs were predicted to be good and they were, no records but the count of steelhead, halfpound steelhead and fall Chinook were all above average. With the predicted winter weather (stormy) we should have good upwellings in the ocean, which means good fish runs for next year.
If you have not seen the Rogue River in the fall, I think your missing out. We truly believe that the Rogue is one of Oregon’s jewels. We book these Rogue Canyon trips as World Class Fishing trips of a lifetime, after your first time down the Rogue River on one of our fall fishing trips you will realize they are much more than just a fishing trip.
