The count down has began… Salmon have started to arrive.

Northwest Steelhead Fishing still remains strong, but we are getting great reports about salmon fishing in the Columbia and Willamette rivers, here in Oregon.

Way to go Jim!

Our Oregon rivers provide unparalleled opportunities for salmon fishing this time of year, and can get down right crazy on the water. Although salmon can be found in some of our rivers  year round, the Springer salmon season on the Columbia and Willamette seems to grab the most attention.

Oregon has two main salmon seasons, fall King Salmon and the spring Chinook Salmon. Spring Chinook Salmon are the smaller of the two, averaging between 10 and 40 pounds each. They are very exciting  to catch, and are well worth any trouble. Spring Chinook Salmon are rich in omega-3 fat and have been named the best eating salmon at the World’s Fair every year that they have been entered.

There are a ton of reason to eat salmon,  it’s hard to know where to start. It’s a fish that most people who don’t like fish usually enjoy. It’s firm enough to grill, can be cooked in many different ways, and doesn’t dry out as easily as many other fish.

Usually our Oregon salmon can be eaten without fear of excess contaminants or mercury, and it has a very high nutrient profile.

Salmon is a highly nutritious food, with protein, and the good kind of fats… A small serving of  our Oregon Salmon provides a full day’s requirement of vitamin D. That same piece of fish contains over half of the necessary B12, niacin, and selenium, and is an excellent source of B6 and magnesium. One of my favorite ways to cook our Salmon is in tin foil, with a complete sliced orange sliced on top… Butter, well its optional :)

Do not over cook, there is nothing worse than an over cooked piece of Salmon.  I have been to a number of Barbeques or even better 5 star restaurants, where they (the so-called “cook”) absolutely ruin a great piece of Salmon.

A Chinook Salmon for Carla!

As we prepare for the switch from small coastal rivers and Steelhead fishing, to the Columbia and Willamette Springer Fishing, we always have built up emotion, but I think more so this year. With a great Steelhead season under the belt,  and reports of the Salmon arrival, the anticipation of trying to catch the elusive Spring Chinook Salmon intensifies.

We are wrapping up the last couple of weeks of one Great Steelhead Season in Oregon and headed north.  Still a couple of dates available for Salmon Fishing in April, Give us a Call and Lets go catch one of these remarkable fish.
