It’s amazing how fast my favorite season comes and goes.  We only have one more Rogue Canyon fishing trip left.  September bookings were just ok, we really did not get started until Mid September.  All in all though it has been a good season.  Salmon fishing was good below Rainy Falls this year.

We have caught a fair number of adult steelhead and our past few trips half-pound steelhead fishing was good on day tow and three of our trips.

Even more outstanding than the good fishing has been the amazing weather. WOW! now the fall colors are starting to really pop, with brilliant reds, oranges and yellows, it’s no wonder mid-October is my favorite time of year on my favorite river.

The crew, Tina and I  would like to thank all who joined us this year and thank you for supporting us and thank you for letting us share the Rogue River with you.

Thanks Again, :)

Craig & Tina

Deschutes Redside

With the Deschutes River Levels off the charts, fishing has been as good as we have seen in years past. The high water has not effected the bug hatches or the need to feed by the trouts. So with the sun and some very determined fisherman (and amazing guides) our Deschutes fishing season has been outstanding.  We have a few weeks left here in Eastern Oregon, then we head south for our Rogue Rafting Season.

Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing:
We have been watching the Rogue Closely this year. Not only to monitor the the water levels and temps for our Rogue Rafter, but also watching for signs of what our fall season may bring for fishing. All signs are pointing to an unbelievable fall season.

Gold Ray DamGold Ray After Damn RemovalLast summer we wrote on the Rogue River Outfitters blog about the removal of the Gold Ray Damn. This could point to an epic time for the Rogue River. Now three main stem dams Savage Rapids, Gold Hill and Gold Ray have been removed resulting in 157 miles of free flowing Rogue River. Also the Rogue River fish run cycles due to ocean conditions and river flow, we are now in an up cycle. This with the noted damn removals and a snow pack that we have not seen in decades could be setting the Rogue up for one of the best fall fishing seasons ever.

Rogue River Oufitters Fall Rogue SeasonWe begin our Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing Season in September and run through November.  If you have not experienced this trip or it has been a few years since you last saw the Rogue in Fall, we believe this year fall season is one you shouldn’t miss. Contact Tina today for available dates.

Trip Updates:
We only have 4 seats left for the Rogue River Rafting Wine Tour. These dates are July 20-22. The first nights menu is posted on our RRO-Rafting, Christine from Southern Oregon Wine Blog is now preparing the wine pairing’s for the trip.

PS. Dad and I have a new website visit RogueFishingGuides.com. It has been long in coming now we have joined together for the first time on-line.

*Proud to say we are now one of the last privately owned and owner operated Rogue River Outfitter.

denny hughsonWe have just launched a new website www.RogueFishingGuides.com.  This site  brings Denny (aka Dad) and Craig together on one page. With nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience we thought it was important that these two, Father and Son, were brought together in one place.

Denny started guiding in 1966 on the Rogue River and Deschutes River. In 1986,  Denny decided to turn all of his Multi-Day Trips over to his son Craig. They now both fish the Lower Rogue River and the Rogue River Bay and enjoy comparing notes after a day of fishing. Denny and Craig and have been known on the Rogue River as two of the best.

As most of you know, Craig has fished and rafted with Denny since he was a young boy.  At the age of 21, Craig purchased his fathers’ Deschutes River business and soon after that purchased Rogue River Outfitters. He now runs the 3 and 4 day Rafting and Fishing trips through the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon. Craig tries to be on all of these trips but on occasion he has to miss one.  In that instance, Rogue River Outfitters has the most experienced and knowledgable guides on the river, some of which have been with RRO for over 10 years.

craig hughsonAs the world becomes more and more commercialized, big companies are buying out the small mom and pop river outfitters.  We are proud to say we are one of the few owner operators left on the Rogue River.

From Grants Pass to the Rogue Bay, these “Rogue River Outfitters” have you covered with nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience.

Visit the new site to learn more about both Craig and Denny.

Rogue River Fishing 2010

Rogue River Outfitters guided Katherine Paiva and her husband down the Rogue River this fall. It was a teriffic trip through the canyon… Katherine wrote about her trip on gowestusa.com below is a copy of what she wrote.

REELING IN STEELHEADS ON THE ROGUE

Fighting it out with a stubborn, 7 pound female.

BY KATHERINE PAIVA

A trip down the thirty-five miles of designated wilderness area on the Rogue River is a once in a lifetime experience. No one cued the bear, but there was always the threat of an appearance.

The weather was cool, some rain/chance of showers — and we caught more fish that I could have ever imagined before an audience of osprey, bald eagles, sun-preening turtles, deer, wild turkey, and otters.

The scenery was rugged, rocky, and dotted with small broccoli-head like trees. The water was Saran-wrap smooth: placid and serene one minute, turbulent and roaring rapids the next. Every once in a while, as we approached a set of rapids, our guide would say in a low calm voice “Put on your life jackets now, hold on tight, and stay very, very still.”

Rogue River Outfitters Canyon FishingNeither my husband nor the Rogue River Outfitters guide told me about Coffee Pot pass on the third day. The river winnows to a space barely boat-length wide. There is unruly washing machine turbulence, and stories-high rock on all sides. We made it through by the sheer will, strength, experience and tenacity of Craig Hughson, our ‘been-down-the-river-a-1,000-times’ guide. Eyes open, teeth clenched, holding on for dear life, swaddled in my giant marshmallow life jacket … I thought “what could be better than this?” Crowds on the rocks above cheered.

Float fishing the Rogue was even better than I’d been led to believe. Although I didn’t catch the biggest fish on our trip,  the one I landed was a very strong headed female steelhead. She came in at 7 lbs, and pulled the three of us around like a toy on a string.

I was holding my pole high and reeling in, letting out and freaking a bit. When the fish shot downriver we yelled “Crikey! We’re going down the rapids!!!!” (or something to that effect), all at the same time. We were a noisy, bobbing, praying wooden boat missile.

The boys were very supportive; Craig, our guide, was rowing like mad… stabilizing our shoot down the rapids (and hoping I wouldn’t fall out or lose the fish). My husband was relaying supportive thoughts like “Reel!!! Let it out!!! Reel! Don’t lose it, damn it”, etc.

One of the biggest “duh” moments when float fishing is that you can’t stop the boat when you catch a fish (funny, it seems that way on TV) — hence, my catch-and-actually-get-the-fish-to-the-boat skills were a little lacking. My heart was pounding and I was close to tears when we finally made it to a quiet spot, got her to the boat for a quick snap (for the unbelieving at home), and then let her go.

I can only hope my Dad was watching. His biggest wish was to catch a steelhead every winter. He seldom succeeded. What powerful, strong willed, beautiful, and big hearted creatures.

Katherine thanks so much for the story.  It is always fun and interesting to hear just how the Rogue River affects our clients. :)

Rogue River Outfitters fishing report for 2010 and the quick forecast for 2011.

Click here to see available Rogue dates for 2011

We started our Rogue Fall fishing season September 2nd, with a one boat trip.  Bookings were light this year, we ran a couple of smaller trips and thanks to some wonderful guest and friends we has a couple of full trips.  One thing I have to say is that it was a very good year to fish the Rogue canyon, with the removal of Gold Ray dam the fish, (mainly steelhead) left the lower river early and filled the canyon.  Even though the water was a bit high and quite off color the steelhead bit well.

Rogue River Outfitters Fall Canyon FishingMother nature was also on our side.  We experienced unusual September rains which made fly fishing good and the rains kept the fish coming, then we experienced a normal but great October, sunny 75-80 degree days some call it an Indian Summer but on the Rogue we except this weather and we seem to get 3 plus weeks a year in October. On October 24th we received another good shot of rain followed by a new shot of fish and 2 more weeks of sunshine.

Rogue River Outfitters Fall Canyon FishingThe Rogue River had 3 dams; Savage Rapids at Grants Pass was removed in fall 2009.  Gold Ray dam was removed this fall and Lost creek which is a large flood control dam built after the 1964 flood and will probably never be removed.

It was a great disappointment to all anglers this year to have dirty water but the fish didn’t mind it at all, surprisingly to me the steelhead bit very well.  There should be no more man caused surprises for the Rogue River.  With the dams gone we should see improved fish runs and better water quality.

Rogue River Outfitters Fall Canyon FishingThe predicted fish runs were predicted to be good and they were, no records but the count of steelhead, halfpound steelhead and fall Chinook were all above average.  With the predicted winter weather (stormy) we should have good upwellings in the ocean, which means good fish runs for next year.

If you have not seen the Rogue River in the fall, I think your missing out.  We truly believe that the Rogue is one of Oregon’s jewels.  We book these Rogue Canyon trips as World Class Fishing trips of a lifetime, after your first time down the Rogue River on one of our fall fishing trips you will realize they are much more than just a fishing trip.

Book your Rogue Canyon Fishing Trip for 2011 now. Book online or give us a call, all our available dates are now posted on www.rrotrips.com. :)

Kris & Rex Rider 10-1-2010

We did not have a Rogue canyon trip this week, it’s too bad the river is prime and the weather is awesome!

Fishing in the Rogue Bay is slowing down due to a strong north wind, the bar is rough and this seems to be keeping fish from coming in, once the bar lays down there  should be one more shot of salmon and steelhead.

I fished the past two days at Grants Pass and steelhead fishing was good.  We caught 1-7 lb Adult Steelhead and 30 or so half pounders our first day out.

Fishing the Rogue River

Way to Go Todd :)

The next day caught a  4 lb,  6lb and another 6lb  Adult Steelhead with 20 plus half pounders  as well, we also lost 4 other Adults.   Day one was good day two was great!

The river is in great shape and fishing should remain good through November.  This is good news for steelheaders.

This is one of my favorite times on the Rogue.  Not much preasure from other fisherman, and soon the colors will be coming out.  Fall, Catching a Steelhead on the Rogue River.  Well it just doesn’t get any better!

Rogue River Outfitters 2010

Fall seems to be moving in fast this year.  We have begun to see the vine maple and alder start to fade to color.  We have even noticed the days are getting shorter… Are last three trips down the Rogue Canyon, and in the Rogue Bay,  have just been unbelievable.

Rogue River Fishing 2010We won’t get into the exact numbers, but just to give you an idea our last trip through the canyon, over 100 half pounders on flies in 3-days. We even had a double, on one rod.

The cold air is moving in, the rain is in the wind.  We know here in the northwest our days of good weather are numbered.

Every now and again in life the stars do align, the last couple of weeks were loaded with great fishing, wonderful weather, and terrific clients, this can only make a person appreciate!

Putting in tomorrow for another 3-day through the canyon. Can’t wait for this next trip… We will report back shortly… :)

PS. For those wondering. The salmon in the above (top) picture weighed 45 lbs.  That is not a photo shopped picture.  The Rogue River in the fall “Gotta love it!” :)
