Here at Rogue River Outfitters it is Deschutes Salmon fly season… Come summer time in Montana they have a similar “big bug” hatch, grass hoppers.  I’m sure the Montana flyfishing enthusiasts is as ready for the temperatures to rise and the “big bugs” to come out as we were the first of April.

Until you have had one of the big Redside climb on your #8 dry salmon fly it is hard to explain the anticipation for this season…

Found this video from Simms on Montana Hopper Season…

SimmsFishing Summertime in Montana means hopper time! During this time of the year anglers can target some of the largest trout in Montana with big terrestrials… Summertime, when the living’s easy… Filmed with the crew of the Stonefly Inn, Twin Bridges Montana. Produced by Beattie Outdoor Productions.

Enjoy,

Still a couple of seats available in June on the Deschutes.  Give us a Call lets see if we can find a date for you. :)

When you have such a good season it’s sometimes hard to move on to the next one.  Spring Chinook Salmon fishing has been one of those seasons.  This year was predicted to be very, very good and all predictions have come true.  I have been guiding full-time for 27 years and this has been one of my best spring salmon seasons.  I had a great ending to a great season, my last four days were awesome!  The weather, my guests and the fishing were all great!  Tina and I fished the last day together her once a year fishing trip, and we went 5 for 5 with 4 keepers.  A  few bookings are already coming in for next year, I guess  I am not the only one that was pleased with this good Springer season.  I want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who joined me this season not all days were great but the slow days were few and far between, again thank you all very much.

I have put all the salmon gear away and now we are moving on to the Deschutes Trout season.  With the weather and water conditions Trout fishing should be wide open when we arrive on May 17th.  For any last-minute anglers we still have two great stone fly dates available, June 9-11 and June 13-15.  We can also run a trout fishing trip on the Grande Ronde June 13-15 that is also peak stone fly season for this river.

If you have not had the opportunity to fish or float the Grande Ronde give us a call.  It is a Scenic River you will not soon forget, loaded with fish.  Different from the Deschutes in the way that we can fish right from the boat… So the action is none stop,  from one terrific hole to the next you will not be disappointed.

Give us Call, lets get you booked on the Deschutes or the Grande Ronde in the month of June.  Stand by Redsides we are on our way! :)

Way to go Tina :)

There's Trouble! :) Jeff, Jim,Rick,Jim

What a Year! :)

Thanks Again for a great 2010 Salmon Season!

I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Christine, Carol, and Steve Lewis for a really fun day this past Friday.  We were 5 for 9 with 4 nice keepers and one wild fish returned.  Good Job Lewis family!  :)

I have only a handful of Spring salmon fishing days left, then it’s off to the Deschutes, look out trout here we come!   I do want to say “thank you” to everyone who joined us salmon fishing this spring.

Not everyday was great but for the most part it was a very, very good season, one of the best I have ever had.  Our 2011 bookings are a reflection,  I know it’s a year in advanced but we are already receiving bookings for next year, thanks to you and the good fishing.

Wrapping up such a good Salmon Season is always tough.  A person never wants to say die…  We know the Deschutes is right around the corner for us.  But maybe if the weather will help us out a bit this week,  we can go back to the Salmon for the last few remaining days before we head east.

Thanks again for a great season and give us a call if you would like to get your seats book for next year.  Now To The Redside’s over east, were Coming Soon!

Baked Pesto Salmon

  • 2-Salmon Fillets (4-6 ounces each), about 1 inch thick
  • 2-Small yellow summer squash or zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 1-Small red onion =, cu ito 1- inch wedge
  • 1-tablespoon olive oil
  • 1-garlic clove, Pressed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1-lemon
  • 2-tablespoons of prepared basil pesto

(prepared basil pesto is flavorful sauce made with basil, garlic, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and olive oil.  It can be found near the refrigerated fresh pasta in the supermarket.)

Preheat oven to 425.

Cut yellow squash crosswise into 1-inch slices.  Cust slices in half. Cut onion into 1-inch wedges.  In a small bowl, combine oil, pressed garlic, salt and black pepper.  Add vegetables; toss to coat.  Arrange vegetables on pan around the Spring Chinook Salmon.  That was just caught hours before.

Zest of the lemon to  measure 1/2 teaspoon.  Juice lemon, 2 teaspoons of juice.  In bowl combine lemon zest, juice and pesto; mix well.  Brush top and sides of the salmon with the pesto mixture.  Bake 12-14 minutes or until Salmon flakes easily with fork and vegetables are crisp-tender.  Garnish with additional lemon zest if desired.

Wine Suggestion:

The 2009 Abacela Albariño would be a great pairing for this dish. Albariño embraces many fresh seafood dishes. Since the recipe contains basil and garlic, selecting a wine that is not too ripe or oaky is important. Albariño has lively acidity, providing a sense of freshness with creamy textures and minerality. $18

Enjoy,

Christine

It has been a crazy year Salmon Fishing on the Columbia and the Willamette.  Just as the Willamette River was getting into perfect condition our Oregon weather turned.First week or so of April the storms came rolling in, one after another, throwing the Willamette into a mess.  With the Willamette out of shape, we moved up to the Columbia ( want to mention, we were not the only ones on the move, us and 10 million of our best friends moved north).  Even with all the pressure on the Columbia, we were catching fish.  The weather has started to improve again, so we now will make the move back to the Willamette to see if the fish have remained or moved up river.  We are always amazed at how this fishery draws people from all around the  northwest.

With the Willamette improving but not in perfect shape last weekend, the spring chinook fishery saw some good catches with 168 boats checked and 75 chinook landed. Even the bank anglers had a decent catch rate, showing 18 spring chinook and 4 winter steelhead checked in for 178 bank rods.

Nice Job Amy :)

Hydro readings at Willamette Falls on April 12 showed flows dropping nicely at 27,000 cfs, the water temperature up to 49°, and the visibility improved to 2.6 ft. Hence we are on the move back to the Willamette.

As mention in the last post we are working on our new website.  It will be a different experience for our customers and we hope  it will be a useful tool.  With the new site you will be able to book the majority of our trips online.  We have also created an all new Rogue River  Map, that will be interactive for our Rogue River clients.  Whether fishing the Rogue, or on a family rafting trip, we think this will be great to review.

Also other big news coming up, Rogue River Outfitters will be offering its first Annual Wine Rafting Tour.  We have partnered up with the founders of The Southern Oregon Wine Blog to put together a wine tasting trip down the Rogue River this summer.  Details are in the works, so stand by for more info. It will be a trip you will not want to miss.

Its hard to believe but we are almost half way through the 2010 Salmon season.  We have started to pack for the Deschutes.  Our calendar is just about booked on the Deschutes.  We do have a few openings left, give us a call and lets catch one of the Deschutes Redsides on a Fly!

The weather in Oregon seems to be improving.  Next week we are expecting mid-50’s with cold evenings.  Give it a month and we will be on the Deschutes River in eastern Oregon.  Although we love to fish for the almighty Chinook Salmon there is a fever that starts about this time of year, a fever that intensifies as the weather gets better.  We drive by or float any water way and we notice (we being those of us with this fever) the bug hatches in the morning and evening, the riffles that we know are holding the last big trout in the northwest.

The video we posted, in titled “drift”. Received some great comments from our readers.  One reader posted a comment, “ That made my day, cant wait to get there. Forget the springers, bring on the Redsides.”  Its coming, the weather is changing, bugs are beginning to dance on the water, soon we will be casting on the Deschutes River.  I’m with Dave Abott, “Bring on the Redsides!”

The Video below is another great one. It starts a little slow, but give it time… Enjoy. :)

You may have notice a slow down on the posts this week… We are working hard on the Rogue River Outfitters new website. So stand by on that, its coming soon.

Still a few spots open on our Deschutes Fly Fishing schedule.  Give us a call lets see if we can fit you in… Lets go fishing.

April Fools! :)

Actually this is the birthday crew, John Weisz and I have been fishing on April Fools (his birthday) for at least 26 years in a row now, some trips have been quite fishy and  others have not but it’s always a special day.  Last year we had 5 beautiful Springer’s this year just one, it was a day that we all throughly enjoyed. Speaking for myself and the others it’s always a good day when your sharing it with our good friend John.  I already look forward to next April 1st.

David, Craig, Andy and Steve

We survived the storm, wind, rain and who knows what else that was thrown at us Friday on the Columbia.  Oh, Yeah 3 awesome spring chinook!  With the weather conditions we had it was amazing that anyone caught a fish.  Fishing was quite good, we saw a number of fish caught and we had a good day.  I do believe it is going to be a great Spring Chinook Salmon Season.

Still a couple of Seats open for the 2010 Salmon Season.  Give us a call and lets go Fishing!
