As many of you know the Willamette and Columbia Rivers were predicted to have near record runs of Spring Chinooks. This had me very excited, expecting to have a great springer season BUT………….. Mother Nature stepped in and threw a curve ball our way. With lot’s of rain and high water and a bouncy barometer, the fish run was not only fish late but has caused inconsistent fishing, there have been a few great days followed by so so fishing.

I only have 3 more days left of my springer season and still believe that May and June could be very good for the Willamette Chinook Springers. But now we are off to The World Famous Deschutes River,  fly fishing for the magnificent Red side Trout!

Maybe next year the Oregon Chinook Springer run and mother nature will team up for a the ultimate spring salmon season. :)

Oregon Chinook Salmon

Oregon Chinook Salmon fishing this year has been unbelievable!  Although the weather (water conditions) have forced us to cancel a few trips,  the trips we have made qualify for the record books…

Chinook Salmon Fishing in OregonOn Wednesday we fished a crew of  seasoned salmon fisherman.  Some of these guys have been fishing with RRO for over 25 years and have seen the Columbia River and Willamette River at its “best” and “worst”. By 10:00 am we had 4 of those elusive Oregon Chinook Salmon in the boat.

All of us were fairly certain that was the end of the bite for the day and with memories of this fishery from the past, we realized what a special thing it really is. :|

A few of the our crew started spreading the word by cell and text on their success. One of the guys (we will not mention his name, to protect the innocent) was so intent on bragging rights over the phone, he did not notice his rod had bent in half and he had hooked up again. Oregon Chinook SalmonDespite everyone yelling at him and all the normal ribbing and commotion he finally picked his rod up and believe it or not,  the fish was still there!

These guys had been blessed by the “Chinook gods” and seemed to do no wrong! They ended up the day around 2:00 and had gone 6 for 6. Now that’s a memorable day! They headed home to grill some fabulous fresh salmon fillets.

Most every day has been great but for the weather, it would have been a terrific season. Easily one of the best we have ever had.  Our 2012 bookings are starting to reflect it. Those that have gone are re-booking and I guess the word is out to the rest. Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing OregonWe know it’s a year away but we would recommend you book for next year asap, the seats are filling up already. :)

Give Tina a call at 888-767-3144 to get the schedule for next year.

PS. Also another quick update: Denny Hughson (aka Dad) and I have joined forces on the Rogue River. We just created a combined website.  Check it out at www.roguefishingguides.com . This site will allow us to work together and give our clients the best options for the Rogue River Fishery. Now we cover the Rogue River with nearly 100 years of combined experience!

PPS: One of the guys just called to say that was the best tasting salmon he had ever eaten.

Winter Steelhead FishingWinter Steelhead season is quickly coming to an end for me.  I have one more week scheduled to fish the Siletz before heading North to the Willamette for Spring chinook.  With the predicted weather forecast it looks like my springer season will start a week early.

Winter Steelhead FishingSome years I look forward to moving on to the next season others years it’s hard to leave, this year has been such a great winter steelhead year that I am not looking forward to it coming to an end.  this past week was excellent fishing, my last two trips I fly fished with Clayton and Doug we hooked 6 beautiful winter steelhead on flies and the next day with Terry and Rick  side drifting, we went 8 for 12 .  It hard to say good-bye when fishing is this good.Winter Steelhead Fishing

When you have such a good season it’s sometimes hard to move on to the next one.  Spring Chinook Salmon fishing has been one of those seasons.  This year was predicted to be very, very good and all predictions have come true.  I have been guiding full-time for 27 years and this has been one of my best spring salmon seasons.  I had a great ending to a great season, my last four days were awesome!  The weather, my guests and the fishing were all great!  Tina and I fished the last day together her once a year fishing trip, and we went 5 for 5 with 4 keepers.  A  few bookings are already coming in for next year, I guess  I am not the only one that was pleased with this good Springer season.  I want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who joined me this season not all days were great but the slow days were few and far between, again thank you all very much.

I have put all the salmon gear away and now we are moving on to the Deschutes Trout season.  With the weather and water conditions Trout fishing should be wide open when we arrive on May 17th.  For any last-minute anglers we still have two great stone fly dates available, June 9-11 and June 13-15.  We can also run a trout fishing trip on the Grande Ronde June 13-15 that is also peak stone fly season for this river.

If you have not had the opportunity to fish or float the Grande Ronde give us a call.  It is a Scenic River you will not soon forget, loaded with fish.  Different from the Deschutes in the way that we can fish right from the boat… So the action is none stop,  from one terrific hole to the next you will not be disappointed.

Give us Call, lets get you booked on the Deschutes or the Grande Ronde in the month of June.  Stand by Redsides we are on our way! :)

Way to go Tina :)

There's Trouble! :) Jeff, Jim,Rick,Jim

What a Year! :)

Thanks Again for a great 2010 Salmon Season!

We have all had a friend that has been a friend for a lifetime.  Weve worked hard and yes we’ve played way harder together…

Life can, and does, throw at us challenges and trials from time to time. One thing always remains our friendship, and bond as friends… Today our friends have started to fade away. But the respect and understanding of how important  that “bond” is,  if your lucky,  can make a person take pause.  We start to realize there is an end,  and there is no better time to go fishing than now.

So if you can and your near your favorite beverage, this post is to Friends, take moment grab your drink and make that toast, you need to or you wish you had.

” To Friends.”

“Until your backing runs out!” if you know what I mean

We went 2 for 2 this day… Three of us in the boat, 4 of ‘em look’in… :)

I do not know if you have noticed the last few posts my mind has been over east on the Deschutes.  I’m very excited about the up-coming Deschutes Fly Fishing season, but the last few trips here on the Willamette, fishing for Chinook Salmon has brought my focus back to the valley.

We have not had less than four opportunities per day for the past week.  It has been great fishing.  The photo above is Jeff and Amy Ambsberry.  This day we went 5 for 7 and the two we sent back were natives.

Tuesday was another great day landed 4.  Stormy as all get-out but the fishing keep us warm.  Word is they are doing very well under the Sellwood Bridge, I think the Salmon have moved in…

I know the trout are calling but I’m thinking the Deschutes River can wait, while the Chinook Salmon Fishing is on!

Since we know the Salmon are going to continue up river it seems wrong to stop fishing for them… We have decided to extend are Salmon season, and chase the Oregon Chinook.  We have added 3 more days to our season.  May 10th, 11th, and 13th.  We are headed to the Santiam, one of my favorite rivers to Salmon, and Steelhead fish in Oregon.

Ok guys 3 more days have just opened up.  If you have not fished the Santiam you will love it.  If you have had the opportunity to fish it in the past then you know what I mean when I say it is one of the most beautiful watersheds in Oregon, and only an hour from Portland.

Gives us a call and lets chase the Oregon Chinook Salmon together, on the Santiam… :)

Baked Pesto Salmon

  • 2-Salmon Fillets (4-6 ounces each), about 1 inch thick
  • 2-Small yellow summer squash or zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 1-Small red onion =, cu ito 1- inch wedge
  • 1-tablespoon olive oil
  • 1-garlic clove, Pressed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1-lemon
  • 2-tablespoons of prepared basil pesto

(prepared basil pesto is flavorful sauce made with basil, garlic, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and olive oil.  It can be found near the refrigerated fresh pasta in the supermarket.)

Preheat oven to 425.

Cut yellow squash crosswise into 1-inch slices.  Cust slices in half. Cut onion into 1-inch wedges.  In a small bowl, combine oil, pressed garlic, salt and black pepper.  Add vegetables; toss to coat.  Arrange vegetables on pan around the Spring Chinook Salmon.  That was just caught hours before.

Zest of the lemon to  measure 1/2 teaspoon.  Juice lemon, 2 teaspoons of juice.  In bowl combine lemon zest, juice and pesto; mix well.  Brush top and sides of the salmon with the pesto mixture.  Bake 12-14 minutes or until Salmon flakes easily with fork and vegetables are crisp-tender.  Garnish with additional lemon zest if desired.

Wine Suggestion:

The 2009 Abacela Albariño would be a great pairing for this dish. Albariño embraces many fresh seafood dishes. Since the recipe contains basil and garlic, selecting a wine that is not too ripe or oaky is important. Albariño has lively acidity, providing a sense of freshness with creamy textures and minerality. $18

Enjoy,

Christine

It has been a crazy year Salmon Fishing on the Columbia and the Willamette.  Just as the Willamette River was getting into perfect condition our Oregon weather turned.First week or so of April the storms came rolling in, one after another, throwing the Willamette into a mess.  With the Willamette out of shape, we moved up to the Columbia ( want to mention, we were not the only ones on the move, us and 10 million of our best friends moved north).  Even with all the pressure on the Columbia, we were catching fish.  The weather has started to improve again, so we now will make the move back to the Willamette to see if the fish have remained or moved up river.  We are always amazed at how this fishery draws people from all around the  northwest.

With the Willamette improving but not in perfect shape last weekend, the spring chinook fishery saw some good catches with 168 boats checked and 75 chinook landed. Even the bank anglers had a decent catch rate, showing 18 spring chinook and 4 winter steelhead checked in for 178 bank rods.

Nice Job Amy :)

Hydro readings at Willamette Falls on April 12 showed flows dropping nicely at 27,000 cfs, the water temperature up to 49°, and the visibility improved to 2.6 ft. Hence we are on the move back to the Willamette.

As mention in the last post we are working on our new website.  It will be a different experience for our customers and we hope  it will be a useful tool.  With the new site you will be able to book the majority of our trips online.  We have also created an all new Rogue River  Map, that will be interactive for our Rogue River clients.  Whether fishing the Rogue, or on a family rafting trip, we think this will be great to review.

Also other big news coming up, Rogue River Outfitters will be offering its first Annual Wine Rafting Tour.  We have partnered up with the founders of The Southern Oregon Wine Blog to put together a wine tasting trip down the Rogue River this summer.  Details are in the works, so stand by for more info. It will be a trip you will not want to miss.

Its hard to believe but we are almost half way through the 2010 Salmon season.  We have started to pack for the Deschutes.  Our calendar is just about booked on the Deschutes.  We do have a few openings left, give us a call and lets catch one of the Deschutes Redsides on a Fly!
