Our previous Rogue Canyon trip was great! Half pounder fishing continues to be the best that I have seen in many years. The weather is changing and we are going to finally see some much need rain. The fall rain will make the Rogue fishing even better! Fall colors are now popping up everywhere in the canyon it is an amazing time of year, you have to see it to truly appreciate its beauty.

Oregon is so beautiful in the fall but especially in the Rogue River Canyon, come and see the colors and enjoy some great fishing while taking it all in. :)

I realize that we are only mid-way through this season but I’m already looking forward to next season on the Rogue.  It’s been nearly 10 years since we have hit the 10 year average on half pounders, so far we have hit that average and quite possibly have broken it!  fishing for half pounders has been very good and as we have all learned; a good half pounder year this year, means a good adult year next year.  I am already looking forward to some great steelhead fishing on the Rogue River next season.  Meanwhile………….

I’ll continue enjoying the outstanding half pounder fishing that we are experiencing. :)

Our first fall canyon fishing trip was a great success, we were a two boat trip with Guy Billings and myself as guides.  Our guests were a father, daughter and two son family.  We celebrated Jim’s (father) 70th birthday at Black bar Lodge with a really cute cake that Guy carefully guided down the rapids.

The river was beautiful, the water is very clear this year thanks to the dam removals.  We saw 8 bears and lot’s of fish.  The last week of August was cool with temperatures in the mid 80′s due to this the river cooled and the fish were very active.  On our trip the weather was back in the high 90′s and the water temperature was near 70 but fishing was still better than I’ve seen in quite a few years.  We caught salmon the first day, day two was so, so  each boat caught over 15 half pound steelhead, then day three was off the charts, we honestly lost count catching two at a time hooking fish before the line was even out it was amazingly good and really fun!  I can only imagine how good it will be when the water cools.

Since May I have primarily been on the Deschutes.  I am home on the Rogue and gearing up for our fall Rogue Canyon fishing season.  Early reports are awesome, ODFW netting at Huntley Park has produced many record catches of both fall chinook, adult steelhead and 1/2 pounders.  I have spoken to a few guide friends who have made late August fishing trips, already their reports have been excellent!  One friend reported seeing more steelhead and 1/2 pounders than he can ever remember, this is really exciting news.

Bookings are extremely light this year we have a lot of great dates available, looks like those who have signed up are going to be rewarded with great fishing.  If you are looking for a trip this year please call we do have some great dates available. :)

Rogue River Steelhead Fishing

As many of you know when it comes to fish  management and fish predictions The Rogue River is clustered with the Northern California Rivers at about Cape Blanco the fish runs split and tend to migrate two different directions.

Last year all of the central and Northern  coast rivers had great returns of fall chinook, while Northern California and Southern Oregon were still slow.  Fishery biologists  have predicted an 800,000 salmon return for the Sacramento and Klamath rivers and 300,000 salmon for the Rogue River.  This would be about three times greater than average for the Rogue and historically when Northern California  rivers have good runs of salmon the Rogue has a great run.

I am really excited for this fall and we should have fishing like the good ol days.

Rogue Steelhead for "T"

Rogue Steelhead for "T"

Tina and I were watching the making of “Blue Collar Comedy Tour”  the one with Jeff Foxworthy, Ron, Larry and Bill.  They were talking about their friendships, surprised successes ect..  Then they talked about their feeling of it all coming to an end, that’s when it hit me, they said it will never be the same again.  I truly feel the same at the end of our Fall Rogue season.  I guide year round but our big season starts min-May.  The crew comes together and we reunite with friends and guests, some guests who have shared river trips with us for up to 35 years.  Speeding ahead to our last trip of the season.  I always feel empty knowing I won’t spend time with my crew until next year and knowing I may not ever see some of my guests again, knowing it will never be the same again.  It may be better next year but it won’t be the same.

Needless to say it’s January and I’m looking forward to seeing my crew and sharing a laugh, fish, steak and a new memory with my very special guests. :)

It’s amazing how fast my favorite season comes and goes.  We only have one more Rogue Canyon fishing trip left.  September bookings were just ok, we really did not get started until Mid September.  All in all though it has been a good season.  Salmon fishing was good below Rainy Falls this year.

We have caught a fair number of adult steelhead and our past few trips half-pound steelhead fishing was good on day tow and three of our trips.

Even more outstanding than the good fishing has been the amazing weather. WOW! now the fall colors are starting to really pop, with brilliant reds, oranges and yellows, it’s no wonder mid-October is my favorite time of year on my favorite river.

The crew, Tina and I  would like to thank all who joined us this year and thank you for supporting us and thank you for letting us share the Rogue River with you.

Thanks Again, :)

Craig & Tina

Deschutes Redside

With the Deschutes River Levels off the charts, fishing has been as good as we have seen in years past. The high water has not effected the bug hatches or the need to feed by the trouts. So with the sun and some very determined fisherman (and amazing guides) our Deschutes fishing season has been outstanding.  We have a few weeks left here in Eastern Oregon, then we head south for our Rogue Rafting Season.

Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing:
We have been watching the Rogue Closely this year. Not only to monitor the the water levels and temps for our Rogue Rafter, but also watching for signs of what our fall season may bring for fishing. All signs are pointing to an unbelievable fall season.

Gold Ray DamGold Ray After Damn RemovalLast summer we wrote on the Rogue River Outfitters blog about the removal of the Gold Ray Damn. This could point to an epic time for the Rogue River. Now three main stem dams Savage Rapids, Gold Hill and Gold Ray have been removed resulting in 157 miles of free flowing Rogue River. Also the Rogue River fish run cycles due to ocean conditions and river flow, we are now in an up cycle. This with the noted damn removals and a snow pack that we have not seen in decades could be setting the Rogue up for one of the best fall fishing seasons ever.

Rogue River Oufitters Fall Rogue SeasonWe begin our Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing Season in September and run through November.  If you have not experienced this trip or it has been a few years since you last saw the Rogue in Fall, we believe this year fall season is one you shouldn’t miss. Contact Tina today for available dates.

Trip Updates:
We only have 4 seats left for the Rogue River Rafting Wine Tour. These dates are July 20-22. The first nights menu is posted on our RRO-Rafting, Christine from Southern Oregon Wine Blog is now preparing the wine pairing’s for the trip.

PS. Dad and I have a new website visit RogueFishingGuides.com. It has been long in coming now we have joined together for the first time on-line.

*Proud to say we are now one of the last privately owned and owner operated Rogue River Outfitter.

denny hughsonWe have just launched a new website www.RogueFishingGuides.com.  This site  brings Denny (aka Dad) and Craig together on one page. With nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience we thought it was important that these two, Father and Son, were brought together in one place.

Denny started guiding in 1966 on the Rogue River and Deschutes River. In 1986,  Denny decided to turn all of his Multi-Day Trips over to his son Craig. They now both fish the Lower Rogue River and the Rogue River Bay and enjoy comparing notes after a day of fishing. Denny and Craig and have been known on the Rogue River as two of the best.

As most of you know, Craig has fished and rafted with Denny since he was a young boy.  At the age of 21, Craig purchased his fathers’ Deschutes River business and soon after that purchased Rogue River Outfitters. He now runs the 3 and 4 day Rafting and Fishing trips through the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon. Craig tries to be on all of these trips but on occasion he has to miss one.  In that instance, Rogue River Outfitters has the most experienced and knowledgable guides on the river, some of which have been with RRO for over 10 years.

craig hughsonAs the world becomes more and more commercialized, big companies are buying out the small mom and pop river outfitters.  We are proud to say we are one of the few owner operators left on the Rogue River.

From Grants Pass to the Rogue Bay, these “Rogue River Outfitters” have you covered with nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience.

Visit the new site to learn more about both Craig and Denny.
