Rogue River Rafting
4515468692_a1c4223cef_oTina and I just spent the past few days in Merlin picking up our new paddle raft and organizing our rafting equipment.  It was 91 sunny and the river was beautiful. Flowers along the river bank were in bloom and the canyon was calling like a huge magnet pulling on me.  It was hard to drive away.

4438870020_75450662e7_bFor the next 7 weeks we will be on the Deschutes River Fly fishing for trout, with present weather and water conditions it should be a great season. We have one open date in June and one in July come join the fun.

Right now the beauty of the Rogue is still etched in my mind.  4379739035_41daa00539_bI am looking forward to what should be one of the best raft season we have had in years.  We have great dates and a variety of trip options available, so come splash and giggle with us.

4465430798_0f10493b54_bSo far Steelhead fishing has been good and I expect it will only to get better as Oregon’s late winter storms roll in. I will be fishing for Steelhead  through March then I will move to Spring Chinook on the Willamette and Columbia in April and early May.

We will start our Deschutes River Trout season in mid-May, bookings look good, however we still have June 9-11 and June 12-14 this week is a great week for trout fishing. The Deschutes is one of our most popular fly fishing trips, if you are a fly angler and have not fished the Deschutes you really owe it to yourself to.

After last year it’s not hard to look forward to July and August Rogue rafting season. We finally had a real summer in Southern Oregon. The Rogue is a special river with all it has to offer but when you mix Rogue River rafting and a Southern Oregon summer it’s a one of a kind river experience, I can’t wait!

5201853326_983e8498c6_bA great summer rolled into an even better fall last year. The weather was great, water levels were favorable and fishing for half pounds was excellent. Salmon and steelhead fishing was good also but the half pounders stole the show. Historically a good half pounder year is followed by a good adult steelhead year; this simply gives me more to look forward to. As a guide I am truly blessed, I have the chance to travel through Oregon fishing the great rivers Oregon has to offer at the time of year they produce the best. Sometimes my time on the river is to short this only means that I’ll look forward to it more next year.

We are extremely fortunate to have the same crew returning this year, they are all really good people and each one of them brings something special to each river trip. They all do their best to keep me in line or drive me nuts not sure sometimes. I am lucky to get to work with professional quality guides.

Where are we and when?

  • February- March: Winter Steelhead fishing, central Oregon coast, primarily the Siletz River.
  • April-mid-May: Spring Chinook salmon up on the Willamette and Columbia Rivers
  • May-July: Fly Fishing for the World famous Deschutes Resides
  • June-July: Trout fishing Grand Ronde river wilderness
  • July-August: Wilderness White Water rafting trips on the Rogue River
  • August: Fly Fishing Lower Deschutes River summer steelhead
  • Sept – Nov: 3- 4 day Rogue River Wilderness steelhead and salmon fishing trips
  • September: Fall Chinook fishing Rogue and Coquille
  • October: One day steelhead fishing Rogue River

Please call if you should have any questions about any of the trips mentioned above, we will be more than happy to help 1-888-767-3144.

Your Hosts,
Craig & Tina

Since May I have primarily been on the Deschutes.  I am home on the Rogue and gearing up for our fall Rogue Canyon fishing season.  Early reports are awesome, ODFW netting at Huntley Park has produced many record catches of both fall chinook, adult steelhead and 1/2 pounders.  I have spoken to a few guide friends who have made late August fishing trips, already their reports have been excellent!  One friend reported seeing more steelhead and 1/2 pounders than he can ever remember, this is really exciting news.

Bookings are extremely light this year we have a lot of great dates available, looks like those who have signed up are going to be rewarded with great fishing.  If you are looking for a trip this year please call we do have some great dates available. :)

I spent much of my summer trout and steelhead fishing on the Deschutes.  While driving I-5 from Portland to Grants Pass I had a realization; The Willamette Valley really has a small window of summer, while in the Rouge valley summer began about June 20th and it will continue through mid September.  So far we have had 14 days over 100 degree weather, yes that is hot but it’s perfect when you’re in the water!  Our Rogue Rafting 2012 season has been great.  WOW if you are missing summer then come visit us on the Rogue River.

By the way next years 2013 dates are now available visit our Rogue River Outfitters website to see dates and book online. Come enjoy some SUN! :)

Tina and I were able to do a trip down the Rogue River with my youngest daughter Mandy and her other half Mike. Also along for the ride where our Labs Lexi and Sprig. We had the time of our lives… It was only the second time Tina and I have been able to do a fun trip together this time of year.

We hit great weather with high 90′s each day and the water felt incredible!   Other than the amazing beauty of the Rogue, I noticed the water quality.  The Rogue had about 4″ of visibility which is great.  If you remember two small dams had been removed in the past 2 years, these dams grew non toxic algae discoloring the Rogue, this is common in many rivers but NO LONGER in the Rogue River, its beautiful and should be good for our fishing season as well.

The dams held back the gravel and sand for years, now with the dams gone we saw a lot more shallow gravel and sand bars.  This will be good for fishing and sand bars on the shore line made for great camping.

Our Rogue Rafting trip was great and everything I saw was so healthy for the Rogue River.  We have abused so many of our rivers and water way, it is such a relief to see good things happen and see the positive changes that occur so quickly. :)

Rogue Steelhead for "T"

Rogue Steelhead for "T"

Tina and I were watching the making of “Blue Collar Comedy Tour”  the one with Jeff Foxworthy, Ron, Larry and Bill.  They were talking about their friendships, surprised successes ect..  Then they talked about their feeling of it all coming to an end, that’s when it hit me, they said it will never be the same again.  I truly feel the same at the end of our Fall Rogue season.  I guide year round but our big season starts min-May.  The crew comes together and we reunite with friends and guests, some guests who have shared river trips with us for up to 35 years.  Speeding ahead to our last trip of the season.  I always feel empty knowing I won’t spend time with my crew until next year and knowing I may not ever see some of my guests again, knowing it will never be the same again.  It may be better next year but it won’t be the same.

Needless to say it’s January and I’m looking forward to seeing my crew and sharing a laugh, fish, steak and a new memory with my very special guests. :)

It’s amazing how fast my favorite season comes and goes.  We only have one more Rogue Canyon fishing trip left.  September bookings were just ok, we really did not get started until Mid September.  All in all though it has been a good season.  Salmon fishing was good below Rainy Falls this year.

We have caught a fair number of adult steelhead and our past few trips half-pound steelhead fishing was good on day tow and three of our trips.

Even more outstanding than the good fishing has been the amazing weather. WOW! now the fall colors are starting to really pop, with brilliant reds, oranges and yellows, it’s no wonder mid-October is my favorite time of year on my favorite river.

The crew, Tina and I  would like to thank all who joined us this year and thank you for supporting us and thank you for letting us share the Rogue River with you.

Thanks Again, :)

Craig & Tina
