We completed our last Deschutes trout fishing trip July 23rd.  Fishing was so so, the fish appeared to be moving into deeper water as they always do in late summer.  We did quite a bit of nymphing and caught some beautiful red sides.  It’s a strange feeling floating down a section of river knowing you won’t be back until next year, saying good-bye for now and see you next season.

Now it’s off to the Lower Deschutes to chase summer steelhead.  I am really forward to an exciting month of steelhead fishing.

We have almost completed our Deschutes Trout  and Grande Ronde Trout seasons, we have been on the water 46 out of the past 48 days.  The salmon fly hatch was as good as I’ve seen in years.  May weather was outstanding then came June. I think the word June must mean “rain and wind“. We had a lot of unfavorable weather in June because of this we did have some great may fly hatches. The report from the Deschutes ~ fishing still remains quite good.

Our first two Grande Ronde trips we battled high cold water, the river was beautiful as ever but fishing was slow.  Our third trip June 30-July 2nd was quite good.  The river was still on the high side about 4000 csf but fishing was excellent.  On one day we landed a rainbow trout that was an easy 25′ inches and 5 to 6 pounds, we have the entire catch on film and will post as soon as we can.

It was great to end our Grande Ronde season on a high note.  The Grande Ronde is a hidden jewel and the most amazing trout fisheries I’ve seen when it is on.  Since it is a natural free-flowing river controlled by mother nature it is hard to plan for perfect fishing but it’s always beautiful. :)

Deschutes River Fishing

The Salmon fly hatch appears to becoming to an end.  I must say from the 14th of May up until now we  experienced some of the best fishing on the Deschutes in 10 plus years.  The Caddis hatch should be going strong when we return to the Deschutes later this month.

The crew and I are off to the Grande Ronde River to hit the same stone fly hatch.  Both the weather and river levels are favorable for the Grande Ronde.

More good news…. Summer steelhead counts appear to be strong in all the Oregon rivers, this is good news for the Deschutes steelhead fishing and the Rogue River steelhead fishing.

I am off to the Deschutes this morning for our first  trout fly fishing season.  I really look forward to this season and it’s been a while since we have put in with great of forecast, it’s going to be great!

Well……….. I have to come clean about Spring Salmon season, it was a so so year, we would have a big day then the next day would be slow.  The water was up and down and warm then cold, you get the picture.  The biggest and greatest new item of the year was the Sonic Flasher.  It is a flasher with a buzz blade in the center.  It is a fish catcher to say the least.  I have to admit I am partial to this flasher because my son-in-law Seth and his brother Zach came up with the idea and it is amazing.

My sources up in the Portland area tell me that the fish finally have shown up in good numbers, so go by a Sonic Flasher at fisherman’s and go catch a springer!

Sonic also sells regular flashers, reverse spin flashers, you name it they do it and they work!  Website www.byoflashers.com

From the Deschutes this evening I say “hello” and if you have time to come visit us  this sumemr either here on the Deschutes or down on the Rogue River this season we will be waiting for you with drift boats and fly rods in hand or kayaks and rafts with paddles  ready to go.  Our site got a face lift, check it out; www.rogueriveroutfitters.com

Just over a year ago we posted a blog about the new cooling tower that PGE had added to Pelton Damn… We have fished the Deschutes River for over 30 years and this year noticed some definite changes. Is this because of the Cooling Tower or just a weird year, who knows… But As mentioned in the post nearly 14 months ago there are some definite concerns we should all have.

Questions and answers on Deschutes water temperatures From PGE Posted On Their Site:

July 29th, 2011

The selective water withdrawal facility is now in its second year of operation, and we’re getting questions about how we’re managing water temperatures in the Lower Deschutes. Here are some answers for you:

Have you noticed a difference on the Deschutes? Let us know your thoughts, we would love to hear from you.

Lower Deschutes River Steelhead Fishing

I must say that it is hard to leave this beautiful place (southern Oregon’s Rogue River Valley).  But now I am off to the Lower Deschutes to fish for the hottest fly biting Steelhead that exist.   Deschutes steelhead are only 5 to 12 pounds but they are a kick!  As hard as it is to leave the Rogue to my crew, I am equally looking forward to a Deschutes sun rise and the sound of a screaming fly reel. :)

Grande Ronde River

Our apologies for the delay in posting, this time of year time seems to be able to get away from us more then any other.  We have been on the Rogue Rafting, Deschutes Trout  and Deschutes steelhead fishing trips but we want to tell you about out 2 mid -July Grande Ronde River Trout trips.

Grande Ronde River TroutMother nature never seems to stop amazing me.  With the amazing snow pack we had this year it looked as if we would not be able to fish the Grande Ronde at all but the weather cooperated and we were able to do our 2 trips that were scheduled for mid-July.  We were not sure what hatches we would find being mid-July; this is where mother nature impressed me the most; High water, cold water, cool weather, the stone fly hatch that would normally accure in mid-June took place in mid-July!

Some of our rivers have cooling towers where they can manipulate water conditions and temperatures BUT mother nature is never wrong.  I worry about the rivers that man is manipulating.

Grande Ronde River FishingThe crew and I showed up at Minim (launch site) on July 13th, river flow was 4,700 cfs and the bite was on!!!!  Trout fishing was very good and the river was as beautiful as I remembered.

Trip 2 was July 16th river was 3,700 cfs and fishing was even better, even though we were there in mid-July due to our winter and spring weather the conditions were as if we were there in mid-June.  the wild flowers were blooming, the mock orange lined the shore lines with the fragrance of orange smell looming in the air.  Grande Ronde River

Needless to say after 20 years of fishing the Grande Ronde these 2 trips ranked in the top 10 of fishing trips that we have ran on the Grande Ronde, years like this make it hard to leave and really excited to come back next year.

What will mother nature offer us next season???? :) Visit our flickr page to see more photo’s from this wonderful eastern Oregon River.

Deschutes River Canyon23 years ago Bill Lock of Salem Oregon, himself a long time client, referred to us a new group of clients. This group of guys were from Reno Nevada, they were putting together a college reunion.  This one trip has spawned into 4 consistent and sometimes 5 Reno Nevada group trips.

Reno Group Art HickleyMost of the original group go on two different trips, one in early June and we just completed the second trip. I am glad to say that both groups had great trips this year. The early June group hit the salmon fly hatch and the second group… well they are true trout hunters they just love the caddisfly hatch and man it was on.

Reno Nevada Brad JohnsonThe caddi’s hatch has been strong this past week with warming weather and water levels that are consistently falling.  I want to thank the Reno boy’s for being such good friends and guests. We have our favorite Reno trip coming up next week, the Boys bring their wives.

May I add these ladies are darn good anglers. :)

Soon we head out for a mixed season of Rafting the Rogue River and fly fishing the lower Deschutes for the Columbia/Deschutes Steelhead.  Found this great video trailer about fly fishing for Steelhead in Kodiak Alaska.  Some great shots and fun to watch. Enjoy.

Just a quick note, not always but on occasion we have had double digit days fly fishing for steelhead on the lower deschutes.  The crazy thing is we are just a few hours from down town Portland.

We live in a pretty special place. :)
