We want to take a minute and say THANKS to all of our blog followers. We are fast approaching 16,000 views… For some of the big outfits that may not seem like a bunch, but for us we are humbled. This little blog was designed to keep our clients informed about our seasons and to share a few great photo’s. It has become a fishing update staple for more than a few.

Thanks Again :)

Tina and Craig were able to take a quick break last weekend. Most people when they take a break from work do not go back to work with the spouse and family for relaxation. Well… Tina a Craig headed to the Rogue Bay for something new, more Fall Rogue Bay Salmon Fishing. They went 3 for 3 (nice job Tina), its more than a job it’s a passion for them.

Above is a few photo’s from previous trips ~ The Rogue Bay has been good to us this fall.

Deschutes River Fishing

The Salmon fly hatch appears to becoming to an end.  I must say from the 14th of May up until now we  experienced some of the best fishing on the Deschutes in 10 plus years.  The Caddis hatch should be going strong when we return to the Deschutes later this month.

The crew and I are off to the Grande Ronde River to hit the same stone fly hatch.  Both the weather and river levels are favorable for the Grande Ronde.

More good news…. Summer steelhead counts appear to be strong in all the Oregon rivers, this is good news for the Deschutes steelhead fishing and the Rogue River steelhead fishing.

I recently had the pleasure of fishing with Sam Wurdinger who recently started a jig company named Dinger Jigs.  Sam has  quite a variety of jigs they are well tied and they catch fish.  Sam ties using owner hooks and the finest Marabou when you see his jigs , they are beautiful.  This is one of the 7 fish Sam hooked proving his jigs do work.   I have defiantly been sold on fishing jigs  I look forward to catching a lot more fish on a Dinger jig.

Thank you Sam good job! :)

If you would like to try some of these awesome jigs contact Sam Wurdinger at 503-932-8386 or email Sam at dingerjigs@yahoo.com

Grande Ronde River

Our apologies for the delay in posting, this time of year time seems to be able to get away from us more then any other.  We have been on the Rogue Rafting, Deschutes Trout  and Deschutes steelhead fishing trips but we want to tell you about out 2 mid -July Grande Ronde River Trout trips.

Grande Ronde River TroutMother nature never seems to stop amazing me.  With the amazing snow pack we had this year it looked as if we would not be able to fish the Grande Ronde at all but the weather cooperated and we were able to do our 2 trips that were scheduled for mid-July.  We were not sure what hatches we would find being mid-July; this is where mother nature impressed me the most; High water, cold water, cool weather, the stone fly hatch that would normally accure in mid-June took place in mid-July!

Some of our rivers have cooling towers where they can manipulate water conditions and temperatures BUT mother nature is never wrong.  I worry about the rivers that man is manipulating.

Grande Ronde River FishingThe crew and I showed up at Minim (launch site) on July 13th, river flow was 4,700 cfs and the bite was on!!!!  Trout fishing was very good and the river was as beautiful as I remembered.

Trip 2 was July 16th river was 3,700 cfs and fishing was even better, even though we were there in mid-July due to our winter and spring weather the conditions were as if we were there in mid-June.  the wild flowers were blooming, the mock orange lined the shore lines with the fragrance of orange smell looming in the air.  Grande Ronde River

Needless to say after 20 years of fishing the Grande Ronde these 2 trips ranked in the top 10 of fishing trips that we have ran on the Grande Ronde, years like this make it hard to leave and really excited to come back next year.

What will mother nature offer us next season???? :) Visit our flickr page to see more photo’s from this wonderful eastern Oregon River.

Deschutes Redside

With the Deschutes River Levels off the charts, fishing has been as good as we have seen in years past. The high water has not effected the bug hatches or the need to feed by the trouts. So with the sun and some very determined fisherman (and amazing guides) our Deschutes fishing season has been outstanding.  We have a few weeks left here in Eastern Oregon, then we head south for our Rogue Rafting Season.

Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing:
We have been watching the Rogue Closely this year. Not only to monitor the the water levels and temps for our Rogue Rafter, but also watching for signs of what our fall season may bring for fishing. All signs are pointing to an unbelievable fall season.

Gold Ray DamGold Ray After Damn RemovalLast summer we wrote on the Rogue River Outfitters blog about the removal of the Gold Ray Damn. This could point to an epic time for the Rogue River. Now three main stem dams Savage Rapids, Gold Hill and Gold Ray have been removed resulting in 157 miles of free flowing Rogue River. Also the Rogue River fish run cycles due to ocean conditions and river flow, we are now in an up cycle. This with the noted damn removals and a snow pack that we have not seen in decades could be setting the Rogue up for one of the best fall fishing seasons ever.

Rogue River Oufitters Fall Rogue SeasonWe begin our Fall Rogue River Canyon Fishing Season in September and run through November.  If you have not experienced this trip or it has been a few years since you last saw the Rogue in Fall, we believe this year fall season is one you shouldn’t miss. Contact Tina today for available dates.

Trip Updates:
We only have 4 seats left for the Rogue River Rafting Wine Tour. These dates are July 20-22. The first nights menu is posted on our RRO-Rafting, Christine from Southern Oregon Wine Blog is now preparing the wine pairing’s for the trip.

PS. Dad and I have a new website visit RogueFishingGuides.com. It has been long in coming now we have joined together for the first time on-line.

*Proud to say we are now one of the last privately owned and owner operated Rogue River Outfitter.

denny hughsonWe have just launched a new website www.RogueFishingGuides.com.  This site  brings Denny (aka Dad) and Craig together on one page. With nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience we thought it was important that these two, Father and Son, were brought together in one place.

Denny started guiding in 1966 on the Rogue River and Deschutes River. In 1986,  Denny decided to turn all of his Multi-Day Trips over to his son Craig. They now both fish the Lower Rogue River and the Rogue River Bay and enjoy comparing notes after a day of fishing. Denny and Craig and have been known on the Rogue River as two of the best.

As most of you know, Craig has fished and rafted with Denny since he was a young boy.  At the age of 21, Craig purchased his fathers’ Deschutes River business and soon after that purchased Rogue River Outfitters. He now runs the 3 and 4 day Rafting and Fishing trips through the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon. Craig tries to be on all of these trips but on occasion he has to miss one.  In that instance, Rogue River Outfitters has the most experienced and knowledgable guides on the river, some of which have been with RRO for over 10 years.

craig hughsonAs the world becomes more and more commercialized, big companies are buying out the small mom and pop river outfitters.  We are proud to say we are one of the few owner operators left on the Rogue River.

From Grants Pass to the Rogue Bay, these “Rogue River Outfitters” have you covered with nearly 100 years of combined Rogue River Fishing experience.

Visit the new site to learn more about both Craig and Denny.

I did get my Easter Salmon we had a nice day went 3 for 4 on Sunday and while I was out-of-town at a meeting in Merlin, Oregon at Morrison’s Rogue River Lodge, Craig seem to have stayed pretty busy catching these wonderful fish.  On Monday he went 3 for 6, Tuesday 2 for 8 and yesterday 6 for 10.  Even though  the weather has not good at least salmon fishing has been.  It looks like we will all get a break this weekend from the rain and I must say if you have never been salmon fishing your really missing out on one of the most  beautiful and amazing fighting fish we have to offer here in Oregon.

I do not get  the chance to go fishing much but I must say that the salmon  we caught on Easter Sunday brought back why I love to get out and go fish not to mention that I get to spend some quality time with my husband doing something we both love.  Thank you Craig for a wonderful Easter Sunday.

Jeff Amsberry

Jeff Amsberry

This year has taken a toll on Tina and myself, we have had 6 good friends and clients pass away.  March 27, 2011  our dear friend and family friend Jeff Amsberry passed away.Jeff went to school with my parents, he guided with my dad and they lived 1/4 mile from us in Albany.

Growing up Jeff was always a person in my life, his son Brad became my best friend in second grade and we continued that friendship until we lost Brad at age 23.Jeff would take us fishing, as we  grew older he would take us and our boat and we would meet him at a given time to go home.  We dare not be late.

Jeff AmsberryA few years after Brad passed Jeff and I had became closer.  Jeff was a person whom you could ask advice, he would quote facts and give his heart-felt opinion.  He helped Tina and I with our home in Merlin as well as many other things.

Jeff introduced me to upland bird hunting something I had not done what a HOOT!  He taught me how to read a bird dog and how to read a piece of ground, we spent some great quality time chasing pheasants in the field. The past three years Jeff has booked all of my Wednesday’s for  Steelhead and Spring Salmon fishing.  We had  a lot of great fishing days and a few, welllllllllllll……………..  I am sure you understand it’s called fishing.

Jeff and JimNo matter what our end result every trip our friendship grew stronger and more memories were made.  This year we were only able to fish together twice, both on the Siletz for Winter Steelhead.  Jeff was no nonsense, get your limit if you could and go home.

Our first trip was with good friend Jim Smith, we fished five holes and caught our limit of 4 hatchery steelies and on our way home by 10am. The second trip was with Rick Campbell it rained, it snowed, then it rained and snowed.  We hooked 15 steelhead landed 8 and kept 4 hatchery steelhead with the boat on the tailor by 11am. These two trips were perfect in Jeff’s eyes. Jeff Amsberry

These were Jeff’s only two trips but they were great and they created great memories for myself, Jim and Rick.  Jim, Rick, Amy, Sharon, Dave, and I, we will all fish and hunt together again.  I know we will sit around tell lot’s of stories, make a few jokes and re-live alot of great memories we had with our dear friend.

Jeff will not soon be forgotten… Thank you for all the wonderful memories!

Winter Steelhead FishingSome years I look forward to moving on to the next season others years it’s hard to leave, this year has been such a great winter steelhead year that I am not looking forward to it coming to an end.  this past week was excellent fishing, my last two trips I fly fished with Clayton and Doug we hooked 6 beautiful winter steelhead on flies and the next day with Terry and Rick  side drifting, we went 8 for 12 .  It hard to say good-bye when fishing is this good.Winter Steelhead Fishing
