Oregon Chinook Salmon

Oregon Chinook Salmon fishing this year has been unbelievable!  Although the weather (water conditions) have forced us to cancel a few trips,  the trips we have made qualify for the record books…

Chinook Salmon Fishing in OregonOn Wednesday we fished a crew of  seasoned salmon fisherman.  Some of these guys have been fishing with RRO for over 25 years and have seen the Columbia River and Willamette River at its “best” and “worst”. By 10:00 am we had 4 of those elusive Oregon Chinook Salmon in the boat.

All of us were fairly certain that was the end of the bite for the day and with memories of this fishery from the past, we realized what a special thing it really is. :|

A few of the our crew started spreading the word by cell and text on their success. One of the guys (we will not mention his name, to protect the innocent) was so intent on bragging rights over the phone, he did not notice his rod had bent in half and he had hooked up again. Oregon Chinook SalmonDespite everyone yelling at him and all the normal ribbing and commotion he finally picked his rod up and believe it or not,  the fish was still there!

These guys had been blessed by the “Chinook gods” and seemed to do no wrong! They ended up the day around 2:00 and had gone 6 for 6. Now that’s a memorable day! They headed home to grill some fabulous fresh salmon fillets.

Most every day has been great but for the weather, it would have been a terrific season. Easily one of the best we have ever had.  Our 2012 bookings are starting to reflect it. Those that have gone are re-booking and I guess the word is out to the rest. Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing OregonWe know it’s a year away but we would recommend you book for next year asap, the seats are filling up already. :)

Give Tina a call at 888-767-3144 to get the schedule for next year.

PS. Also another quick update: Denny Hughson (aka Dad) and I have joined forces on the Rogue River. We just created a combined website.  Check it out at www.roguefishingguides.com . This site will allow us to work together and give our clients the best options for the Rogue River Fishery. Now we cover the Rogue River with nearly 100 years of combined experience!

PPS: One of the guys just called to say that was the best tasting salmon he had ever eaten.

I did get my Easter Salmon we had a nice day went 3 for 4 on Sunday and while I was out-of-town at a meeting in Merlin, Oregon at Morrison’s Rogue River Lodge, Craig seem to have stayed pretty busy catching these wonderful fish.  On Monday he went 3 for 6, Tuesday 2 for 8 and yesterday 6 for 10.  Even though  the weather has not good at least salmon fishing has been.  It looks like we will all get a break this weekend from the rain and I must say if you have never been salmon fishing your really missing out on one of the most  beautiful and amazing fighting fish we have to offer here in Oregon.

I do not get  the chance to go fishing much but I must say that the salmon  we caught on Easter Sunday brought back why I love to get out and go fish not to mention that I get to spend some quality time with my husband doing something we both love.  Thank you Craig for a wonderful Easter Sunday.

Rogue River Outfitters Springer Fishing 2011

What a March so far.  Rain, rain, rain.   It’s the 18th of March and my coastal rivers that I fish have only been fish-able two days.  On the 16th we ventured to the Columbia River for our first Spring Chinook trip.  The fishing reports had been decent and my guests had cabin fever as bad as I did.  The day we arrived the grumble on the river was they were releasing extra water out of Bonneville Dam and that it shut the bit off, not what you want to hear on your first day.

RRO-Trips Springer Fishing 2011We fished till noon without seeing a fish caught, coming up on the tide which was about noon, we saw the first net out as it turned out it was not a great day but a very worthwhile trip.  We saw 5 springers boated and were fortunate enough that we caught two 20 pound hatchery springers.  It looks like mother nature is going to give us a bit of a break so I will be back steelhead fishing the rest of this week, then its springers through May.

Due to a recent cancellation we now have a few springer dates available, don’t miss this chance to catch the king of king’s and spend a beautiful spring day on the water.  Springer Fishing Oregon 2011, Let’s go fishing!

I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Christine, Carol, and Steve Lewis for a really fun day this past Friday.  We were 5 for 9 with 4 nice keepers and one wild fish returned.  Good Job Lewis family!  :)

I have only a handful of Spring salmon fishing days left, then it’s off to the Deschutes, look out trout here we come!   I do want to say “thank you” to everyone who joined us salmon fishing this spring.

Not everyday was great but for the most part it was a very, very good season, one of the best I have ever had.  Our 2011 bookings are a reflection,  I know it’s a year in advanced but we are already receiving bookings for next year, thanks to you and the good fishing.

Wrapping up such a good Salmon Season is always tough.  A person never wants to say die…  We know the Deschutes is right around the corner for us.  But maybe if the weather will help us out a bit this week,  we can go back to the Salmon for the last few remaining days before we head east.

Thanks again for a great season and give us a call if you would like to get your seats book for next year.  Now To The Redside’s over east, were Coming Soon!

We have all had a friend that has been a friend for a lifetime.  Weve worked hard and yes we’ve played way harder together…

Life can, and does, throw at us challenges and trials from time to time. One thing always remains our friendship, and bond as friends… Today our friends have started to fade away. But the respect and understanding of how important  that “bond” is,  if your lucky,  can make a person take pause.  We start to realize there is an end,  and there is no better time to go fishing than now.

So if you can and your near your favorite beverage, this post is to Friends, take moment grab your drink and make that toast, you need to or you wish you had.

” To Friends.”

“Until your backing runs out!” if you know what I mean

We went 2 for 2 this day… Three of us in the boat, 4 of ‘em look’in… :)

I do not know if you have noticed the last few posts my mind has been over east on the Deschutes.  I’m very excited about the up-coming Deschutes Fly Fishing season, but the last few trips here on the Willamette, fishing for Chinook Salmon has brought my focus back to the valley.

We have not had less than four opportunities per day for the past week.  It has been great fishing.  The photo above is Jeff and Amy Ambsberry.  This day we went 5 for 7 and the two we sent back were natives.

Tuesday was another great day landed 4.  Stormy as all get-out but the fishing keep us warm.  Word is they are doing very well under the Sellwood Bridge, I think the Salmon have moved in…

I know the trout are calling but I’m thinking the Deschutes River can wait, while the Chinook Salmon Fishing is on!

Since we know the Salmon are going to continue up river it seems wrong to stop fishing for them… We have decided to extend are Salmon season, and chase the Oregon Chinook.  We have added 3 more days to our season.  May 10th, 11th, and 13th.  We are headed to the Santiam, one of my favorite rivers to Salmon, and Steelhead fish in Oregon.

Ok guys 3 more days have just opened up.  If you have not fished the Santiam you will love it.  If you have had the opportunity to fish it in the past then you know what I mean when I say it is one of the most beautiful watersheds in Oregon, and only an hour from Portland.

Gives us a call and lets chase the Oregon Chinook Salmon together, on the Santiam… :)

It has been a crazy year Salmon Fishing on the Columbia and the Willamette.  Just as the Willamette River was getting into perfect condition our Oregon weather turned.First week or so of April the storms came rolling in, one after another, throwing the Willamette into a mess.  With the Willamette out of shape, we moved up to the Columbia ( want to mention, we were not the only ones on the move, us and 10 million of our best friends moved north).  Even with all the pressure on the Columbia, we were catching fish.  The weather has started to improve again, so we now will make the move back to the Willamette to see if the fish have remained or moved up river.  We are always amazed at how this fishery draws people from all around the  northwest.

With the Willamette improving but not in perfect shape last weekend, the spring chinook fishery saw some good catches with 168 boats checked and 75 chinook landed. Even the bank anglers had a decent catch rate, showing 18 spring chinook and 4 winter steelhead checked in for 178 bank rods.

Nice Job Amy :)

Hydro readings at Willamette Falls on April 12 showed flows dropping nicely at 27,000 cfs, the water temperature up to 49°, and the visibility improved to 2.6 ft. Hence we are on the move back to the Willamette.

As mention in the last post we are working on our new website.  It will be a different experience for our customers and we hope  it will be a useful tool.  With the new site you will be able to book the majority of our trips online.  We have also created an all new Rogue River  Map, that will be interactive for our Rogue River clients.  Whether fishing the Rogue, or on a family rafting trip, we think this will be great to review.

Also other big news coming up, Rogue River Outfitters will be offering its first Annual Wine Rafting Tour.  We have partnered up with the founders of The Southern Oregon Wine Blog to put together a wine tasting trip down the Rogue River this summer.  Details are in the works, so stand by for more info. It will be a trip you will not want to miss.

Its hard to believe but we are almost half way through the 2010 Salmon season.  We have started to pack for the Deschutes.  Our calendar is just about booked on the Deschutes.  We do have a few openings left, give us a call and lets catch one of the Deschutes Redsides on a Fly!

April Fools! :)

Actually this is the birthday crew, John Weisz and I have been fishing on April Fools (his birthday) for at least 26 years in a row now, some trips have been quite fishy and  others have not but it’s always a special day.  Last year we had 5 beautiful Springer’s this year just one, it was a day that we all throughly enjoyed. Speaking for myself and the others it’s always a good day when your sharing it with our good friend John.  I already look forward to next April 1st.

David, Craig, Andy and Steve

We survived the storm, wind, rain and who knows what else that was thrown at us Friday on the Columbia.  Oh, Yeah 3 awesome spring chinook!  With the weather conditions we had it was amazing that anyone caught a fish.  Fishing was quite good, we saw a number of fish caught and we had a good day.  I do believe it is going to be a great Spring Chinook Salmon Season.

Still a couple of Seats open for the 2010 Salmon Season.  Give us a call and lets go Fishing!

A Chinook for Ron!

If you spent Monday in doors some might consider you lucky.  Ron, Brad and I decided to challenge the weather and we did our best to catch a spring chinook on a nasty, nasty day. With all the wind and all the rain we were smiled upon,

Columbia Spring Chinook

Ron and Brad, Nice Job.

Ron and Brad each caught a beautiful Columbia River Spring chinook.  Hopefully my next trip won’t be quite as wet but hopefully fishing will be just as good.  I think I get through days like Monday by day dreaming about beautiful August days  White Water Rafting the Rogue River Canyon, these thoughts keep me warm inside and make me look forward to warmer days.

Better weather Im sure is on the way.  But until then, our boat is heated and dry, so Lets go Fishing!
