Spring Chinook Salmon

Spring Chinook Salmon

I have a month of winter steelhead fishing left before I begin my spring salmon season but I have to say that  I am becoming very anxious.   Everyday I am receiving reports of people catching Springers in the Willamette and the Columbia.  Just hearing these reports makes me want to be there.

Some ThoughtsI also received some bad news, a long time family friend Terry Bain passed away last week.  Terry and my father ( Denny Hughson) guided together in the late 60′s and 70′s. Terry lived on Sauvies Island and was one of the people I spoke to everyday during Salmon season, he was always one of the first to have his boat in the water and would help others who would show up to launch.  He will be greatly missed.

Winter Steelhead Fishing

All our coastal river are low due to the unseasonable great weather. Fishing has remained very good. According to the local weather report we are going to return to our normal weather patterns.  That’s good Oregon needs rain to be Oregon. We can suffer in the summer if we don’t receive our winter rains.

We just had a cancellation for one of our spring Deschutes Trout Fly-Fishing trips. June 9,10.11,2010 just became available for the first time in 30 years.   This is prime time stone fly season (salmon fly). This is a great opportunity for anyone who may want to experience the World-Famous Deschutes Salmon Fly Hatch. Believe me when I say this is a oppurtunity you should not let go by.

Spring Chinook Salmon

One of  Oregon’s most popular fisheries, Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing… The Salmon start to arrive early in March, although this year it seems they are arriving a bit early.  March through April is when much of the fishing pressure is concentrated, on the Columbia and even on the Willamette near downtown Portland.

Kathy's Having Fun

When Chinook Salmon fishing with us we like to spoil our guests.  Our boat is covered and heated with plenty of room under cover.  If you choose to keep warm or keep busy fishing out in the weather, we offer the best of both worlds.  We troll with herring, spinners or plugs from the boat and sometimes even anchor fish.  This is a fishery that Craig has been fishing for over 25 years and if there is Salmon in the Columbia or Willamette be assured he will find them…

Oregon’s Spring Chinook Salmon are definitely the best tasting Salmon in Oregon, and seem to be the brightest chrome color around.  They average in size from 12 to 35  lbs, the Columbia and Willamette offer one of the largest Salmon, Steelhead runs on the west coast.  So if you have ever wanted to fight with one of these beauties come on, let’s go fishing.

It looks like his beautiful weather that we have had these past few days is about to change.  That is okay with me, steelhead fishing has slowed down a bit and the rivers could use a good rain.  We did have a good day Saturday landing these 3 beautiful winter steelhead (way to go Steve, Andy and Mike!)  and last friday one of my guest landed his first Winter Steelhead on a fly, that was pretty exciting for all of us.

Straight from the ODFW web site.  The Willamette and Columbia Springer season has been set.  The Columbia from Buoy 10 to I-5 will be open 7 days a week, from March 1 through April 18th, there will be 4 Tuesday’s in March that the river will  be closed for commercial harvest, the daily bag limit is 2 adipose fin clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination.  ODFW is forecasting 470,000 spring salmon in the Columbia this year. The Willamette river will be open 7 days a week with a daily bag limit of 2 adipose fin clipped chinook salmon or steelhead in any combination. ODFW is forecasting a return of 62,700 chinook salmon in the Willamette this year.

Bookings look good for spring salmon season however we still have a handful of great dates available in April and in May.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to fish one of the largest salmon returns in Oregon’s history.

We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who has checked out our new blog.  This has been fun for us.  We are going to work real hard to keep updates throughout our seasons.

Steelhead fished Monday and went 8   for 9, also fished Wednesday and went 2 for 2.  Planning to fish the rest of the week and it looks like an outstanding beautiful week to be on the water.  With days like today it makes us start to think about Spring and spring chinook fishing.  The predication for this years run on the Columbia is the highest since records have been kept.  The run on the Willamette is not record-setting but an excellent number of fish are predicted to return.  I still have 6 weeks of good steelhead fishing left but I can’t help but  to be excited for April Spring chinook season.  This beautiful weather also makes us think about our Rogue Rafting season.  Fun in the sun!   We have to be patience for raft season because it is still quite a few months away but it is interesting all the happy thoughts a sunny days bring to mind.

Until the development and expansion of the high-tech industry in the 1980s, the North Santiam Canyon’s economy remained heavily dependent on forest product. Despite occasional downturns in the lumber market, the state’s timber-dependent communities prospered. Towns such as Mill City, Detroit, and Idana, experienced small housing booms, merchants carried on a lively retail trade.  With the lumber down turn in the 1980′s came a major slow down for these small logging towns.  Nestled along the North Santiam River these little city economies were hit hard, yet I dare you to try and find a more beautiful setting in the world.

The North Santiam River is a major tributary to the Willamette River, and one of two main forks draining a large swath of the Cascade Range.  The North Fork is the largest fastest of the forks, and offers some excellent fishing for winter and summer Steelhead, as well as Spring Chinook Salmon and Rainbow Trout.

Santiam Steelhead is our main attraction to this river.  The wild winter steelhead run goes well into april, and although the summer steelhead are not native, the hatchery program sustain an excellent summer fishery.  The summer steelhead run can run long after the hot summer, running  into the early part October.  Featuring  a great setting, and a good fishery, we love fishing the north santiam river.

For available dates to fish the North Santiam River, please give us a call.

Remembering an Old Friend

It’s funny how we meet people through life.  Some there is a link for life, others just pass in and out.  One year ago today we lost a friend.  He was one of those that the link was as strong as most of my family, shoot is some cases more.

We over the years  fished a lot of rivers in the Northwest.  From the Deschutes, to the Rogue Bay in Gold Beach.  I’m sharing little here, he had cancer and in the end he was finding it hard to use his hands, to keep warm,  and to do what he loved most, which was to fish.  Even with all that against him he could out fish most, some how the guy knew where they were.

Well I thought it was only appropriate today to archive a thought about him.  For those that knew him, let’s have a toast tonight.  Heres to you Doug I hope your up there with a fish on, standing along a river bank with Brad, Carl, Greg, telling them how good fishing can be in this hole…:)

I steelhead fished three days this past week. Fishing was good but the rivers were getting low and we needed rain.  The rain came.  Next week should be a great week. The long-range weather looks awesome with a few days in the 60′s. For Oregon in February this is a heat wave. Oregonians spend our winters dreaming of warm weather activities  like 90 degree days, rafting the rogue river or bright sunny days standing in the Deschutes river fly fishing for trout or steelhead. Looks like I’ll be spending this weekend tying trout flies and steelhead yarn flies.

After a slow December and January, it was great to get back on the water.  Fishing is not as good as Craig would like it to be but he is spoiled and it’s pretty good.  Craig fished 6 out of 7 days this first week in February, hooking 5 to 6 fish a day, landing what they landed, he had 3 great fish this week one 16lb,  18lb and 19lb.  Craig is to fish everyday this coming week, weather forecast looks good and he hopes fishing holds up.  Today was for church and the Super Bowl, GO COLTS!!!!!
